First Year Involvement

As a first year it can sometimes be intimidating trying to find a way to get involved. Don’t worry though! There are a lot of ways in which first years can get their feet wet with the society, and make some new friends as well as learning some valuable skills.

Elected Positions

Hired Positions
There are a number of positions that are hired every fall with space reserved for first years! Application information can be found on Twitter, Facebook, or the Jobs and Applications page on the website. Below are a list of positions available for first years.

First Year Project Coordinators (FYPCO’s)
Work extensively with a EngSoc Executive or Director on new and/or specialized projects within the Society. Great for gaining experience within the Society and for shadowing portfolios of upper year positions that may interest you! EngWeek Commitee
Work under the Engweek Coordinator with a team of highly awesome people to craft a sensational all week extravaganza of events in second semester. Committee members take responsibility for specific aspects of the week, be it a specific event day, finances, publicity or otherwise.

Engvents Committee
The Engvents Committee’s mandate is to connect engineering students of all years and disciplines through team based competitions and social events hosted throughout the year. Past events have included paintballing, dodgeball tournaments, bowling nights, amazing race style scavenger hunts, and even a Boat Cruise on Lake Ontario! Interested in getting involved and gaining leadership and event planning experience? Join the committee! Applications will be out in the fall So come on out, connect with fellow engineers, and have a great time with Engvents! Movember Commitee
Raising awareness for men’s health by sacrificing our good looks and growing the best mustache that you possibly can. Take a month to celebrate with your mobros and mosistas and enjoy events like the movember ritual and proudly show off all the hair that you can grow on your upper lip. Every year, the Movember Committee runs awesome events to raise money and awareness for men’s health and prostate cancer. We’re planning some awesome events this year, such as Movember themed contests, Friday BBQ’s, and Movember Events at Clark Hall Pub, in addition to selling some merchandise. So if you want to get involved with event planning, meet awesome people, and have a great time while raising money and awareness for the Movember Foundation, this opportunity is for you! External Relations Committee (ERC)
The External Relations Committee (ERC) aims to help promote Queen’s Engineering in a positive way while giving back to the community. Some fun events include holding a 24-hour snow fort building contest, getting to design a float for the Santa Clause Parade and much more! Committee for Inclusivity (COI)
The Committee for Inclusivity explores issues of race, gender, religion, economic status, accessibility and more within the context of the Engineering Society. The committee then puts forth reports to the Engineering Society Council and Executive with action plans to tackle these issues and make Queen’s Engineering a more accepting and inclusive space for everyone. Want to make real change within the society that positively impacts all your fellow students? The the Committee for Inclusivity is right for you! IT Members
Apply to the ‘secret service’ of the Engineering Society and work with the Director of I.T. on all manner of projects under the Information Technology portfolio. Experience welcome but not necessary, you will be trained! Learn great skills to put on your resume, and enjoy challenging projects! If you have any questions about getting involved with the IT Team, email the Director of IT at doit@engsoc.queensu.ca

Communications Team
The Engineering Society has a full fledged Communications Team dedicated to reaching and helping students as well as alumni. Its services are available to all engineering students and groups. It has four distinct divisions, which offer a variety of services: Photography, Videography, Graphic Design, and Internal Records. On top of all those services, collectively the divisions have rebranded student groups looking to reinvigorate their image and communications. Camera and media software training provided for successful applicants. Deputy Returning Officer
A partner in crime hired to work alongside the Chief Returning officer to ensure all aspects of the winter term EngSoc elections run smoothly. This includes enforcing election rules and regulations, reviewing and approving content, organizing the debate night, and implementing new ideas and events to improve voter turnout and participation.
