Ever dreamed of designing and building the very stuff that goes into space? Would you like to experience a real hands-on engineering project from Preliminary-Design Reviews, to Post-flight briefing?
Then you are in the right school at the right time! QSET – the Queen’s Space Engineering Team- is hiring ground-control crew for its new challenge: the CanSat competition. The CanSat competition (http://www.cansatcompetition.com/Main.html) is a design-build-fly competition that provides teams with an opportunity to experience the design life-cycle of a real engineering project. The mission and its requirements are designed to reflect various aspects of real world missions including telemetry requirements, communications, and autonomous operations. This year’s mission:
Launch an autonomous CanSat in the payload section of a model-rocket carrying one large raw hen's egg intact for the entire duration from launch to landing. The descent control system must not use a parachute, para-foil, or any similar device. During the flight and descent, data shall be transmitted once every five seconds to a relay balloon station. The CanSat must land without damaging the egg. Once in the ground, additional bonus challenges include: positioning the egg 2-6 inches away from the landing site, photographing the landing site, collecting impact force data, etc…
So do you think you have what it takes to engineer mission payloads, design aerodynamic descent structures, program chips to relay GPS data to ground-control, or simply having fun building neat stuff? Then QSET has a spot for you. To apply, simply send us an email indicating your year, discipline, interests, and/or hands on experience you might have at qset@engsoc.queensu.ca. Please write a couple of paragraphs about how awesome you are and on which portion of the challenge you believe your strengths lie(be specific).

Ontario engineering students who are passionate about public policy are invited to enter the second annual Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy (OCEPP) Student Essay Competition.
The contest, open to all Ontario undergraduate and graduate engineering students who are also are Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) student members or part of PEO's Engineering Internship Training (EIT) program, offers a $1,000 prize. As well, the winner will be invited to present his or her paper at the centre's 2010 Public Policy Conference, to be held in Toronto on May 7.
"Our centre has great connections to the universities and engineering students and faculty members in particular," notes OCEPP executive director Donald Wallace. "Not only can students further hone their essay-writing skills, they can explore a subject area in greater depth or consider the possibility of additional education or research." It's also an excellent way to build connections with professional engineers, business and association leaders and to enhance future career prospects, he says.
Last year's winners were an undergraduate student from the University of Guelph, and a PhD student from McMaster University. "Depending on the submissions, the centre may declare more than one winner once again," Wallace adds. Competition rules, along with the winning papers from 2009, can be found on the For Students page of www.ocepp.ca.
In addition to the essay competition and annual conference (which has special student pricing) the centre publishes The Journal of Policy Engagement every two months. "All Journal authors are highly accomplished academics, engineers or other professionals, and I strongly urge students to use the Journal as a resource when writing papers and doing research," suggests Wallace.
Four times a year the centre presents noontime seminars in Toronto on current engineering and policy topics such as sustainable energy and the role of engineers in health care. Students can sign up at the OCEPP website to receive regular notification of news and events, as well as join the centre's Facebook group.
