Hello
Everyone!
I hope
that everyone is having a fantastic summer so far. The Engineering Society has a few summer
updates for everyone, including an “Easy Guide to Registration” written by our
very own Vice-President Academic. If
you’re fretting about choosing courses for next year, time-tickets, or
scheduling, this will hopefully clear up some of the mud.
1. EngSoc’s
Guide to Registration (Registration Made Easy!)
2. EngLinks
now looking for Tutors
3. EngSoc
Summer Council / Retreat – July 10th to July 12th
5. Know Your Academic Rights: Course Substitutions
It’s that time of year again! We all know that QCard
can often seem like a mule with a spinning wheel: stubborn and very confusing.
Well, I have good news for you. After extensive
testing regarding mule behaviour and recent discoveries into the secrets of
spinning wheels, your EngSoc has thrown together a guide to registration that
should make things a bit easier.
Check out EngSoc’s guide to registration, located on
the brand new academic section of the EngSoc website (http://engsoc.queensu.ca/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/guide-to-registration-2009.pdf).
After using our eight patented steps, you’ll find
things quite a bit easier. So easy in fact, you’ll be able to register yourself
for courses for the upcoming year, and doesn’t that make us all winners? Well,
aside from those of us who forget to register. That’s no way to win.
If you haven’t already, go on QCard to obtain your
time ticket.
If you have any questions about the registration
process, don’t hesitate to contact me (vpa@engsoc.queensu.ca).
I’ll be sure to answer all emails between sessions extreme bee keeping/base
jumping (another very relevant academic activity).
Have a great summer, and don’t forget to register!
Cheers,
Mike Brown,
Vice-President Academic
Interested in Tutoring for $$$?
EngLinks, a student-tutor matching service, is back! EngLinks
serves engineering students by providing a method for engineering students to
find upper year tutors easily and efficiently. If you're interested in tutoring
next year and you'd like to be advertised by EngLinks (for free!), check out http://engsoc.queensu.ca/academics/englinks/
for more information and an application. Any questions can be directed to
Stephanie Dumais, the EngLinks coordinator (englinks@engsoc.queensu.ca).
Come join the revival of EngSoc's own tutor-student
service!
Are you in Kingston during July 10th to 12th? Then we would like to invite you all to the EngSoc
Summer Retreat 2009! It will be hosted on Queen’s Campus on July 10-12. The
schedule should be complete very soon but the weekend will give everyone a
chance to see what summer office has been up to, a presentation on the General
EngSoc Strategic Plan as well as Workshops. The nights will give opportunities
for social events and games with other bodies around campus. This is a great way to come and meet the next
year’s Executive and learn a bit more about the Engineering Society.
Summer Office is going well with lots of progress. If you
ever want to check out more of our words, check out the website under
Summer Office 2009:

Yours from the newly cleaned student lounge,
Greg Ellis,
Engineering Society President
Budget cuts got you down? Can't find that technical
elective that you were hoping to take? There's still hope! Many similar courses
are offered in other departments (and sometimes within Mathematics), so don't
fret.
According to regulation 2e, you have the right to
attempt a substitution of courses of similar content/course load:
"Regulation
2 (e) An upper year student may request permission for substitution of a course
in his/her program by a similar course, either at Queen’s or elsewhere, by
application to the Operations Committee prior to enrolling in the substitute
course. Approval for a request for a course substitution must be recommended by
the instructor of the prescribed course and the department. For courses other
than Complementary Studies, the request will normally only be considered if the
institution offering the course has an accredited engineering program and if
the student has a cumulative average of at least 60 percent. If a request to
take a substitute course at another institution is approved, the Faculty of
Applied Science will issue a Letter of Permission to allow the student to
enroll in the course."
Make sure you fill out a substitution form and get it
approved by the professor of the course you're substituting along with your
undergraduate chair.
Be
sure to do this before taking the course; if your request is rejected you will
not receive credit!
A course substitution form can be found at: http://appsci.queensu.ca/studentinfo/academic/documents/CourseSubstitutionRequest.pdf
If you have any questions, contact your academic
advisor (http://appsci.queensu.ca/studentinfo/academic/advisors.php)
or your VP Academic (Mike Brown, vpa@engsoc.queensu.ca).
Well, that’s it for this summer issue of the
Engineering Society Newsletter.
I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer!
