Thursday January 7th, 2010-
Welcome back to Queen’s! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday and is ready to hit the books yet again. Can I just say how weird it felt to type 2010?? SO weird.
Monday, January 18th, first year engineering students (thats you!) are invited to participate in the All-Discipline Night, hosted by the Engineering Society and well, me!
The event will showcase all the engineering disciplines, in an open-house style format, where first year students will be able to talk with and ask questions to upper year students. This is a great opportunity to answer some first year students’ questions and provide a general overview, from a fellow student’s perspective before attending Orientation Evenings later in the semester. Orientation Evenings are hosted by each discipline and allow first year students to meet professors, view facilities and familiarize themselves with various departments. Also, PIZZZZZZA.
The event will be held from 5:30PM to 7:30PM in the ILC Atrium. More information about Orientation Evenings can be found here: http://appsci.queensu.ca/firstyr/orientation/
See you all there!

CHECK OUT YOUR SUPER COOL NEW YEAR CREST! BROUGHT TO YOU BY SARAH BURTON, sCI’13, AND BY YOUR VOTES!
Monday September 21st-
YEAR ELECTIONS IN TWO DAYS! Stirling C, Wednesday at 6:30PM. BE THERE. Its a great way to get invovled, make a difference, meet people and make sure that Sci’13 has some awesome events, merchandise and a good year! Check out the post below for more details on how it works and a link to all the postion descriptions.
Now it’s time for some retorical questions. Have you seen those beautiful crests out on Clark Hall Patio and on Upper year GPA’s? Beautiful, I know. How cool would it be to design Sci’13’s crest? SO COOL. Here is your chance to submit a crest that your year will vote on and it’ll be your crest forever! If you eventually get a GPA it’ll go right on the front. AND if your crest is chosen as the winner you will get you very own GPA (hypothetically) for free! That’s right, I said a 355$ GPA for FREE. However, there are some guidelines to follow…
-Can be hand drawn or digitally designed
-Must be full size on letter sized paper (8.2” x 11”)
-Must only contain the Queen’s TriColours; Blue, Red & Gold (Yellow)
-Must say: APPLIED SCIENCE
-Must contain: Year Number (13)
-Must contain: “Q”, Crown, Maple Leaf, Crossed Engineering Hammers
Send your designs to ceo@engsoc.queensu.ca or drop them off at the CEO office, in Clark Hall, by October 1st, 2009.
Happy designing!
Love always from your director of first year,
Robin Johannsen
Monday September 13th-
Hello Sci’13!
Congrats on climbing the pole and becoming a year! You had me worried there for a while. Hopefully your first day of classes went well and you didn’t get too lost…
Over the next couple weeks you will be busy sorting out your classes and workload, balancing your new life and making friends. Don’t worry frosh, you can do it. Also, its the perfect time to get involved as so many opportunities are open to you! First of all, First Year Executive elections are on Wednesday September 23rd in Stirling C and 6:30PM. If you want to run for a position, or even if you don’t, come out and bring your friends. Here is how it all goes down. We start with the presidential election. (Sounds important, eh?) To run you have to be nominated and someone has to second that nomination, and then you accept or respectfully decline. Once we have all the candidates, each one gives a short speech, then they leave the room and the voting happens! You must be in attendance to vote. (This is why you need to bring your friends if you want to run!) Once the president is elected, we move on to the Vice President and so on. For a full list of the positions on the executive check out the link below! I hope this all makes sense to you, if it doesn’t or if you have any questions at all feel free to contact me at firstyear@engsoc.queensu.ca.
See you there!
