Queen’s Biomedical Innovation Team

The Queen’s Biomedical Innovation Team (QBiT) is an undergraduate student-run interdisciplinary design team that focuses on biomedical device design and innovation. The team consists of students in all disciplines, but focuses on concepts discussed in mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering as well as kinesiology. The QBiT team strongly believes in education through application, and thus the team’s projects focus primarily on the design, prototyping, and testing phases of product development.

In the 2015/2016 school year, QBiT designed and prototyped a KAFO (knee-ankle-foot-orthotic) that is adjustable and affordable for people in developing countries. The team presented the KAFO in the 2016 LIMBS Summit in El Paso, Texas and placed 3rd overall. This year, QBiT is designing a health monitoring baby pacifier to track the health of the baby, and notify parents when their health levels fluctuate. QBiT is also prototyping a specialized upper limb prosthetic designed to allow for the ability of specific tasks in third world countries. QBiT aims to continue designing unique innovative biomedical solutions and compete in 1-2 international competitions per year.
