BED Fund

General

The Better Education Donation (BED) Fund is a student initiative that improves our engineering education by purchasing up-to-date, badly needed equipment for undergraduate labs. The money for the fund comes from a $60 sliding scale, “opt-outable” donation made by each undergraduate engineering student. Approximately $65 000 is raised for new equipment each year. There is also a long term, student controlled endowment fund that is supported by the Queen’s fundraising initiatives, alumni and industry.

The BED Fund is governed by By-Law 16 of the EngSoc Constitution and Section ε.A of the EngSoc Policy Manual.

Some purchases made by the fund in the past include a new heat/mass transfer experiment for chemical engineering, a global positioning system for geological engineering, digital oscilloscopes for electrical engineering and a surface roughness testing machine for mechanical engineering.

Stay in Bed

The BED Fund needs your donations through opt-outable student fees to survive. If you choose not to opt out you will donate $60 every year to the fund. If you do choose to opt out, you may do so on a sliding scale; if $60 is too much then maybe $20 isn’t. Give what is right for you.

Something Need Money?

Have you ever been working in a lab and thought to yourself, or more likely out loud, that the lab needs a piece of equipment? Or that some of the equipment is out of date? The BED Fund exists to fix these problems but we need you to tell us what needs work. There are a variety of ways to submit your ideas. All proposals go through your discipline BED reps who decide how your discipline’s share of the Fund will be spent. You may also contact Chris Cochrane (bed@engsoc.queensu.ca) the BED Fund coordinator with any ideas or questions.
